What Is The Meaning of Cross Tattoo Designs?

Cross tattoo designs can have as wide of a range of meaning as the designs themselves. It is often a popular choice for the first-timers due to the easily recognizable meaning of the many different designs. Often a cross tattoo is requested after the death of a close friend or family member since a simple cross is the symbol of the crucifixion of Christ in the Christian faith.

Many people of the Christian faith will wear a tattoo that is the symbol of their personal theology. These crosses are readily available in the tattoo parlor. The Roman Catholic crucifix is one of the most popular cross tattoo designs, as well as the Orthodox cross and the Protestant cross.

However there are several non-religious cross tattoo designs as well. For instance there is the gothic tattoo, which usually has a darker meaning to it. It is extremely easy to interpret the difference between a Christian cross and a gothic cross. Most times the gothic cross will have a snake intertwined around the cross, which is an obvious contradiction to the Christian faith. Also the Golthic cross represents depression and anger. I would think this cross would be a good choice if you feel misunderstood or think of yourself as a radical or insurgent.

Another one of the non-religious cross tattoo designs is the Ankh. The Ankh tattoos represent fertility and infinity and come from the ancient Egyptians. According to the ancient Egyptian belief the Ankh was the key of life that the God’s of the underworld would use to wake up folks who had crossed the river of death; thus bringing them into the afterlife.

Then there is the Tau symbol. This design looks like a T with the two lines intersecting at the top.  The Kabbalists held a belief that each letter of the alphabet had its own unique spirit and they widely thought that the letter T was one of the most powerful letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

As far as cross tattoo designs go the Tribal cross tattoo has gained in popularity recently. There are several persuasive reasons for this and why the tribal cross as a tattoo design is doing very well. This tattoo design gives one a connection to a group and a sense of belonging. This group could be ethnic in nature, a native tribal group or even a philosophical group. It usually represents a strong desire of the bearer to make a genealogical connection with there ancestors.

So it becomes quite clear that cross tattoo designs have much to do with making a statement. This is the case with most tattoos as wearing a tattoo is sort of a visual statement to those around you. Many times one can instantly tell if a tattooed individual has the same beliefs as you, or if they are from the same ethnic background as you or a tattoo can even speak of there personal traits of kindness, gruffness softness or sternness. Of all the different designs, the cross tattoo design can be the most telling of all.
